Situated in the heart of the Indonesian archipelago, off the northwest tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula in West Papua (Irian Jaya), Raja Ampat is a breathtaking paradise. Comprising numerous jungle-covered islands, this region is renowned for its stunning beaches and coral reefs teeming with marine life. The name “Raja Ampat” directly translates to “four kings,” representing the four main islands in the area – Weigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool.

Diving in Raja Ampat is an awe-inspiring experience, where marine life flourishes from the seafloor to the surface, and vibrant coral reefs buzz with activity. The underwater sites are so immaculate and densely populated with marine growth that even a seasoned photographer struggles to find an untouched spot. For macro photography enthusiasts, the diversity of exotic sea life and macro critters is overwhelming. The only downside to diving in this pristine haven is that you might become so enamored with the near-perfect conditions that leaving or diving elsewhere may seem unthinkable.

Encounter both oceanic and reef mantas in these waters. Towards the western tip of Misool, be captivated by one of the world’s most stunning mangroves.

Central Raja Ampat hosts the Dampier Strait, flowing between Waigeo and Batanta, where nutrient-rich ocean currents create an extraordinary underwater environment. Iconic dive sites like Cape Kri and Blue Magic are found here, surrounded by schools of fish and the unique phenomenon of “fish thunder” – the resounding booming sound created when a multitude of fish swiftly move through open water. Further west, the island of Arborek stands out for its jetty dive and pristine surroundings. Journeying northwest of Dampier Strait, the Penemu Islands showcase hard coral gardens and breathtaking lagoon views.

Northern Raja Ampat encompasses the islands of Weigeo, Kawe, and Wayag. Explore the pearl farm of Aljui Bay, known for its unique critters and slumbering wobbegongs under the pearl farm’s jetties. In the Kawe area, west of Waigeo, remarkable rocks and seamounts sit on the equator, offering a unique diving experience between the northern and southern hemispheres. Continuing north, the Wayag area unfolds – an isolated, uninhabited haven with verdant limestone islands, ivory beaches, and palm trees, representing the epitome of paradise. The diving experience here is equally extraordinary, featuring extensive and untouched hard coral reefs. With many islands in Wayag yet to be explored, it’s likely that more dive sites will be discovered in this remote area.
