North Sumatra is a land of fertile valleys and rugged mountains, home to an abundance of animal and plant species all waiting to be discovered on this 6-day adventure tour.  The world’s 6th and Indonesia’s largest island, this is not a destination one looking for a relaxed holiday should pursue.However, those in favor of some soft adventure and cultural insight should consider this tour. Join your local guide and visit architectural wonders steeped in history that include the ultan’s Deli Palace and the Great Mosque.

On this Indonesia tour you will ride elepahnts through rivers and dense jungle passing oil-palm and rubber plantations en-route, before stopping at a local school. Encounter the notorious Sumatran orangutan at the entrance to Gunung Leuser National Park and have the opportunity to observe them eating breakfast!

Visit Batak Karo traditional village at Peceren before you reach Brastagi an area  known for its cool climate, orchids, flowers, vegetables and fruits. It is also home to the Batak Karo people, who have unusual wedding, and funeral ceremonies which can last for days as well as dozens of other unique traditions and rituals that have been well preserved within their culture.

During the last part of this North Sumatra tour venture out to Lake Toba and Samosir, an island within a volcanic lake that was formed over 75,000 years ago. En-route you will stop at the cascading Sipiso-piso Waterfall in the Batak highlands and the village of Pematang Purba.  Here you still be able to observe the long house constructed on pile works about two centuries ago and was known as the dwelling of the ancient Batik Simalungun Kings. This is the ideal vacation for intrepid travelers who want to learn more about off-the-beaten-track destinations and the well preserved  cultures existing within Indonesia.

Day 1Kuala Namu Airport - Medan City Tour - Medan (L)

Arrival at Kuala Namu International Airport. For domestic flights, pick up your luggage and meet with your English speaking Sumatran tour guide outside the main building for the start of your program.

International: Silk Air MI234 from Singapore to Medan arriving at 08:00 (daily) and Malaysia Airlines MH860 from Kuala Lumpur to Medan arriving at 08:50 (daily).
Domestic: From Jakarta to Medan by Garuda Indonesia GA180 arriving at 08:00 (daily) or GA182 arriving at 10:15.

Leave Kuala Namu Airport and proceed to the city center of Medan the capital of North Sumatra and an interesting melting pot of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Batak people living together in harmony.
Proceed to Merdeka square in the center of the city for a walk in the old colonial part of the town which has retained its Dutch colonial architecture: the old Post office and Medan city hall and passing by Kesawan Street.
End your walk at Tip Top restaurant which history dates back to the time of Dutch colonization and where you will enjoy lunch.
Check in at your hotel and time for refreshing.
Around 15:00 your tour guide will pick you up at the hotel for continuing your city tour of Medan.
Visit to Maimoon Sultan’s Deli Palace, built in 1888. In former times the Palace was considered as the centre of the town administration before the city of Medan developed. The sultan himself at this present time has a symbolic function for the Malay community but still lives in the palace.
The tour continues to the Great Mosque (built in 1906 by the first sultan and still considered as one the most beautiful mosques in the country).
End you visit of Medan with the impressive Vihara Gunung Timur, a beautiful Chinese temple.
Return to your hotel.

Later this evening, you will go to Chinatown to experience the pleasure of trying hawker food. This is a very typical way for Indonesian people to have their dinner. You can walk around between all the food stalls and see the hawkers prepare their fresh food. A mix of sounds and smells like you’ve never seen before.

Day 2Medan - Tangkahan (B,L,D)

After an early breakfast and check out we depart for Tangkahan via Binjai and Stabat: the last portion of the journey is a bad un-asphalted road (for about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes)
Upon arrival in Tangkahan you first have to register at the “Gunung Leuser National Park” visitor center before walking to your lodge located on the other side of the river. Access to the lodge is through a nice and impressive Suspension Bridge (15 minutes safe walk) or by “raft” if the water not too high.
Check in at your lodge in Tangkahan after which lunch is served.
Around 14:00 you are picked up from the lodge by the elephant for a 1 hour Elephant ride from the lodge along the river and through the Jungle to the Rehabilitation Centre (2 pax/elephant + local Mahut).
Upon arrival there you have time to watch all the elephants and afterwards it is time to help bathe the elephants. When all is done you make an easy 30 minutes walk back to the lodge.
Remainder of the day is at leisure. You can walk around the lodge and have plenty of opportunity to observe the cheeky Thomas Leaf Monkey in their natural surroundings, or take a refreshing dip in the clear river. (Ask the hotel staff where in the river is the hidden hot spring as that is the best spot for a swim).

Access not possible for vehicles bigger than ELF as the last 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes of the journey will pass through bad roads and the bridge does not allow to be crossed by bus.
Please take a light bag with you only for tonight, the accommodation is basic with no hot water or AC. The driver will proceed with your main luggage to Bukit Lawang.
On Friday, the elephant ride cannot be done because all elephants are on patrol in the park with the rangers. Advance booking is needed as only 5 elephants operate.

We do recommend participants to wear short pants, Tee Shirt and sandals for the activity and bring a change with you for changing when returning to the lodge

Day 3Tangkahan - Jeep to Bukit Lawang - Visit Eco Farm by Becak (B,L)

After breakfast at the Lodge, cross back to the other side of the river using the suspension bridge or raft. A local jeep will be waiting for you in the other side for your off-road trip to Bukit Lawang (approximately 2 hours 30 minutes) passing through rubber plantations and with beautiful jungle and mountain landscapes at the horizon.
Before arriving in Bukit Lawang a short stop to stretch your legs and enjoy a fresh coconut drink at coconut park.
Upon arrival at Bukit Lawang cross on foot the impressive wooden suspension bridge over the Bohorok River for getting to the reception of the Eco Lodge
Check-in at your lodge in Bukit Lawang where lunch is served.
After lunch we cross the bridge again where we are picked by a becak for the visit to the Timbang Lawang eco farm. This motorized sidecar will drive us through the local village to the eco farm which we first visit and afterwards to some more places where we can see such things as the making of brown sugar, rubber tapping,…
Return to the hotel.

Day 4Bukit Lawang 0 Orangutan Trekking - Berastagi (B,L)

Breakfast at the lodge.
Bukit Lawang is at the entrance to Gunung Leuser National Park and is one of the last sanctuaries of the Sumatran orangutan.
Start your trek early at 07:30 behind Eco Lodge (with an additional local English speaking Jungle guide).
The first part is an easy climb to the forest for about 30 to 45 minutes – the local guide always sends a tracker ahead to check where the orangutans are. If some are seen in the first part of the trek guide will suggest people who have difficulty to walk to return to the Lodge with the tracker while accompanying other participants all the way to the feeding Platform (total trekking is 2,5 – 3 hours up and down in the jungle more challenging and can be slippery good shoes are requested).
After observing orangutans at the feeding platform (30 minutes) continue down to the Bohorok river (30 minutes) – where you will use a tube to drift back to the hotel (45 minutes).

Note: Feeding time around 08:30 (or in the afternoon at 15:00) Camera fee is not included and must be paid locally IDR 50,000/camera (around USD 4) and IDR 150,000/video (around USD 11) each time client enter the Gunung Leuser National Park
Time for shower and changing at the lodge before checking out. Lunch is served at the lodge restaurant.

In the afternoon, leave Bukit Lawang to Berastagi in the Karo highlands along a scenic route driving southwards via Sembahe and Sibolangit. In the late afternoon you will arrive at Berastagi, a climate station located at some 1,400 meters above sea-level.
Check in at the hotel late afternoon/early evening.

Day 5Berastagi - Dokan - Pematang Purba - Parapat - Ferry to Samosir Island on Lake Toba (B,L)

After breakfast and check out from your hotel, depart from your hotel around 08:00 for a short city tour of Berastagi: the tour includes an outside visit of the St. Fransiscus Catholic Church, with its unique Batak architecture and in the background a perfect view over Mount Sibayak. Continue with a walk in the local fruit market which is swarming with activity and scenes from traditional Karo life.
Leave Brastagi around 09:30 and proceed to Lake Toba stopping after Berastagi for taking pictures of Mount Sinabung (2 460m).
Stop for a visit of Dokan, a village home to the Batak Karo people who have unusual wedding and funeral ceremonies which can last for days and dozens of other unique traditions and rituals which they still practice. We will meet with a family in one of the longhouses where up to 6 families live together.
Continue to the South towards Lake Toba and make a stop to see the 120 meter Sipiso-piso waterfall which is located in the Batak highlands. The beautiful fall is formed by an underground river that then plunges from a cave into Lake Toba caldera. Here you will also get your first impressive view of this amazing lake.
Continue your journey to Pematang Purba where you will visit Rumah Bolon, a 200 year old wooden house, built on pile works, used to be the dwelling of the ancient Batak Simalungun Kings.
A late lunch will be served en route to Parapat at a local restaurant near Simar Jarunjung.
In the afternoon, drive along the eastern shore of Lake Toba to Parapat.
Board a local ferry with your private vehicle, driver and guide for a one hour boat trip between Parapat and Tomok on Samosir Island (Estimated departure from Parapat at 17:30 – subject to change).
The island of Samosir is located in the middle of Lake Toba, the caldera lake of the Toba Volcano, which was formed over 75,000 years ago. It is the largest volcanic lake in the world.
Direct transfer to your hotel located in Tuk Tuk Peninsula in Samosir Island (15 minutes drive from Tomok) for check in and where you will have time to refresh after your journey.

Day 6Samosir Island (B,L)

Breakfast at the hotel
Today you will spend a full day exploring Samosir Island and Lake Toba.
You‘ll leave Tuk Tuk with your private car and driver accompanied by your guide and proceed to Ambarita, Samosir’s most interesting Batak Toba village and known for its unique stone chairs tribunal and execution stones where enemies and criminals were slaughtered and parts of them eaten by this cannibalistic tribe.
Drive to Simanindo where you’ll be treated to a performance of a traditional Batak Toba dance called Tor-Tor (once a day at 10:30 – 45 minutes) and visit the traditional village and its small Batak museum.
From there we continue along the Eastern shore of Samosir Island to Pangururan the small capital of Samosir. Here lunch is served at local restaurant.

Note: For those who would like to enjoy a relaxing bath, there is a possibility to visit the hot springs after the visit to Tele.

Your driver and vehicle will wait where your boat arrives and you will continue by car to Tele a rarely visited area located on the mainland in the Southern Shore of Lake Toba accessible after crossing a small bridge followed by a 30 minutes drive up the mountain: The view over Samosir Island and Lake Toba from the Observatory tower in Tele is simply breathtaking and the best one you can get over Lake Toba
On the way back to Tuk Tuk via Pangururan stop alongside the road for observing the traditional weaving.
You’ll return to your hotel in Tuk Tuk late in the-afternoon.

Day 7Samosir - Parapat - Pematang Siantar - Medan (B)

Early wakeup call and check out from your hotel, breakfast provided by your hotel.
Transfer from Tuk Tuk and cross back to Parapat with the regular local ferry with you private vehicle, driver and guide joining on board (Departure time subject to change is at 07:00 from Tomok arriving at 08:00 in Parapat).
Drive back to Medan Kuala Namu Airport via Pematang Siantar and Tebing Tinggi with scenic views over estate plantations of rubber and palm oil.
Lunch is at leisure.

A deposit of 25% is required when booking this tour. The remaining balance will be charged 45 days prior departure. For any bookings within 45 days of departure, the full tour amount will be charged upon booking.
